(WASHINGTON, D.C., October 31, 2023)—On October 31, 2023, the U.S. imposed targeted sanctions on the Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE), a state-owned entity that the Myanmar military illegally commandeered after its attempted coup d’état in February 2021. Natural gas sales via MOGE remain the Myanmar junta’s single-largest source of income. The financial sanctions will affect the military’s access to resources received through the entity, which the junta uses to purchase weapons and military material to commit mass atrocities, continuing its nationwide attack on the civilian population.

Fortify Rights has long advocated in publications and during meetings with government officials for the U.S. and other governments to implement such sanctions.
