(COX’S BAZAR, August 25, 2022)—On August 25, 2022, Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day, 11 Rohingya-led civil society organizations in Bangladesh refugee camps issued a statement welcoming the U.S. government’s determination that the Myanmar military’s attack on Rohingya amounted to genocide and crimes against humanity.

The statement read: “Rohingya victims and the survivors had hoped and expected this declaration for a long time,” and declared the determination a “remarkable milestone” resulting from “the efforts of the Rohingya community in Bangladesh and globally, as well as the United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Myanmar, nongovernmental organizations, and many others.” The statement went on to call for “the Myanmar military leadership to be prosecuted for genocide and crimes against humanity.”

Fortify Rights provided technical assistance in drafting and promoting the statement on social media.
